ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE LEGAL ASSISTANT
Offered at Hagerstown Campus
The objective of the Legal Assistant program is to prepare students
with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits
required for an entry-level position in the legal assisting field.
Through specialized coursework, students are prepared to assist
legal professionals. Students have an opportunity to apply classroom
knowledge to actual work experience while serving a
legal externship. Graduates of the Legal Assistant program may be
employed as paralegals, legal secretaries, administrative assistants,
and title abstractors in law firms, private attorneys' offices,
courthouses, government agencies, insurance companies, and legal
departments of companies. Upon successful completion of the program,
graduates will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree.
Graduates of this program may be required by the employer to prepare
and file various court pleadings and non-court documents and instruments.
Additionally, duties may include preparation of intraoffice memoranda
of law, memoranda of points and authorities, appellate briefs, and
other legal writing. The assistant also may
interview and screen clients, research
property titles, and engage in general legal
research including computer-assisted research. General office support
functions may also be expected and required.
The length of the Legal Assistant program is seven quarters culminating
in 97.5 quarter credit hours.

ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE ACCOUNTING
Offered at Hagerstown Campus
The objective of the Accounting program is to prepare students
with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required for
entry-level positions in the accounting field. A variety of specialized
accounting subjects will provide students with a general understanding
of the basic concepts of accounting as applied in business offices
in both the public and private sectors as staff accountants and
office management trainees in specialized areas such as accounts
receivable, accounts payable, and payroll. Courses in written and
oral communications, technological applications, and business organization
help students to understand the broad scope and responsibilities
of individuals working in the accounting field. Classroom instruction
is reinforced through a business-related externship. Upon successful
completion of the program, graduates will be awarded an Associate
of Applied Science degree.
Graduates of this program may be involved in the preparation of
reports and information for the internal and external users and
decision makers of a business. These reports may include financial
statements, income tax returns, payrolls, job costs, and other management
reports.
In these duties, the graduate will demonstrate analytical and problem-solving
skills; effective oral and written communication skills; and the
attitudes and interpersonal skills required in the business world.
The length of the Accounting program is seven quarters culminating
in 100 quarter credit hours.

ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE COMPUTER FORENSICS
Offered at Hagerstown Campus
The Computer Forensics program is designed to provide students
with skills in the area of criminology, data recovery, computer
operating systems, network security, encryption, cybercrime investigation,
the collection and analysis of computer based evidence, ensuring
the integrity of the chain of evidence, and preparing evidence for
presentation in a court of law. Students will gain experience with
professional investigative software and evidence gathering in the
computer lab. Students must pass a criminal background check prior
to the start of classes.
Graduates of this program will be qualified to obtain employment
locally and nationally as a security coordinator, investigator,
computer forensics specialist, intrusion detection analyst, network
security analyst, security specialist, etc.
The length of the program is 7 quarters over a period of 21 months.
Students must complete the program with a minimum of 103.5 quarter
credit hours.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
MEDICAL ASSISTANT
Offered at Hagerstown and Fredrick Campuses
The objective of the Medical Assistant program is to prepare students
with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required for
an entry-level position in the medical assisting field. Curriculum
will provide students with opportunities to develop multi-faceted
competencies necessary in assisting the physician and other healthcare
personnel in the examining room in clinics, home health agencies,
long-term care facilities, physicians' offices, government health
departments, or other medical facilities. Laboratory and clinical
skills are emphasized. Students may apply their classroom knowledge
to actual work experiences while on externship at the College-approved
healthcare facility. Upon successful completion of the program,
graduates will be awarded a Lower Division Certificate.
MEDICAL BILLING/CODING
Offered at Hagerstown Campus
The objective of the Medical Billing/Coding program is to prepare
students with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required
for an entry-level position as a billing and insurance specialist
in either a
physician's office or institutional setting, or as a patient referral
specialist, coder, or medical receptionist. The curriculum will
provide students with the basic skills and
knowledge necessary to submit medical claims for reimbursement,
process bills, operate computerized billing systems, and gain a
working knowledge of various insurance plans. Emphasis is placed
on quality of coding for reimbursement and statistical reporting.
Students may receive hands-on training through externships in acute
care hospitals, physicians' offices,
and long-term care facilities. Employment
opportunities may exist in healthcare facilities and physicians'
offices. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will
be awarded a Lower Division Certificate.
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
MEDICAL RECEPTIONIST
Offered at Hagerstown Campus
The objective of the Medical Receptionist
program is to prepare students with the
knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required for an entry-level
position in the field. Curriculum will provide students with the
basic medical background and business skills required by individuals
working in secretarial/clerical positions in clinics, government
health departments, health maintenance organizations, hospital reception
areas, physicians' offices, and psychiatric centers. Communication
and public relations techniques are stressed, and classroom knowledge
and skills are refined through an externship at a College-approved
medical facility. Upon successful
completion of the program, graduates will
be awarded a Lower Division Certificate.
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
DENTAL ASSISTANT
Offered at Frederick Campus
The objective of the Dental Assistant program is to prepare the
students with the knowledge, the technical skills, and the work
habits required for entry-level positions in the dental field. This
program includes instruction in both the clinical (chair-side) and
administrative aspects of dental assisting. Graduates may become
Qualified/Expanded Function Dental Assistants by passing the Qualified
Dental Assistant examination administered by the Maryland State
Board of Dental Examiners. Although the program is designed to prepare
students to take various certification or licensing exams, the College
cannot guarantee the student will pass those exams. In some cases,
field experience may be necessary to be eligible to take or to successfully
pass the exams. Students are eligible to sit for the State Board
of Radiology Exam.
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
PHLEBOTOMIST
Offered at Hagerstown Campus
The objective of the Phlebotomist program is to prepare students
with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required for
an entry-level position in clinics, drug treatment centers, freestanding
surgical centers, and hospital areas. Students will be trained in
the highly technical area of intravenous blood withdrawal. General
medical and legal knowledge is provided in addition to an introduction
to business skills. Classroom instruction is reinforced in the College's
clinical laboratory and further refined through a hospital or laboratory
externship. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be awarded
a Lower Division Certificate.
