The Somerset School of Massage Therapy was established in 1987. We offer a 600-hour program which can be taken in either a 12-month or a 6-month format. Our 12-month sessions begin in January, June and October, while our 6-month sessions begin in March and September.

Philosophy & Mission
The Somerset School of Massage Therapy was established to provide the highest quality education in the field of Massage Therapy. Our mission is to graduate massage therapists who can be therapeutic as well as nurturing, who can be anatomically specific as well as intuitive, and to provide the business skills necessary for success in today's expanding job market.

At SSMT we educate our students to become massage therapists who possess the skills, knowledge, compassion and professionalism which will put them at the forefront of their profession. Our program exceeds the requirements for New Jersey State certification and the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB).

Educational Goals and Objectives
Our objective is to graduate massage therapists who possess the following qualities:

A comprehensive understanding of the structure and function of the human body which can be used as a foundation upon which to build a successful career
An awareness of the benefits and contraindications of massage and when it is appropriate to refer to other health care practitioners
The ability to design and implement a comprehensive treatment plan which provides competent therapeutic massage for various client populations
Recognition of the importance of self-care, including the principles of proper body mechanics in order to promote safety and prevent injury
An appreciation of the ethical and professional responsibilities of the therapist-client relationship
The professional and business skills necessary to develop a successful massage therapy practice
Competence and confidence in applying the therapeutic techniques learned in the program
Student Body
Massage Therapy attracts a wide variety of people. Our youngest students enroll directly from high school, while our oldest enter the program in their sixties. We attract many individuals from all walks of life. Each semester brings a unique and diverse group of people together.

Our students share common interests in natural healing and a strong desire to help others. During the educational process, the students learn not only the subjects taught, but also gain insight into themselves. Graduates often tell us that the time spent at our School was the most valuable time of their lives.

What Makes Us Different?
Each school has a distinct and unique personality. At SSMT our personality is shaped by our overall philosophy and approach which involves several key elements:

Focus on Anatomy and Physiology - In building any structure, if the foundation is weak, the structure will not be able to stand on its own. We provide a solid foundation focusing on the anatomy of the human body - especially the muscles. A working knowledge of anatomy and physiology enhances our graduates' capacity for professional growth and enables them to communicate effectively with other health care professionals.

Hands-on Everyday - Class time is split between lecture and hands-on, therefore students practice techniques daily. This substantially increases the retention of materials taught.

Multiple Teaching Techniques - The 3 major learning styles are visual, auditory and kinesthetic. We incorporate a multi-sensory approach to address each learning style.
