As the nation's only online, competency-based university, WGU focuses on developing a highly competent graduate, not just

someone who has accumulated credit hours. In fact, WGU does not award degrees based on credit hours or required courses. Your progress is determined by your ability to pass rigorous assessments—typically test, projects and a portfolio—that measure your knowledge and skills as you move through your degree program.
Created with the needs of busy adults in mind, WGU offers online programs in three areas: Business, Information Technology, and Education (including teacher certification programs through the WGU Teachers College).

Is WGU Right For You?

Clearly not for everyone, WGU is ideal for the student who can thrive with a high degree of independence. The online delivery of your program gives you great flexibility to schedule your own "class" time. Plus, you may be able to accelerate your degree progress if you commit sufficient time and are willing to study hard to prepare for your assessments.
You can also take advantage of competencies you already have in your field of study. For instance, if you're interested in a Business degree, the knowledge you've accumulated from prior academic or work experience in one or more areas of your degree program (such as accounting, management, or marketing) may help you move through the assessments more quickly. It's a very efficient way to obtain your degree.

From enrollment to graduation, you will work one-on-one with a personal faculty mentor—an expert in your field of study. Your faculty mentor will help you determine what you already know and what you will need to learn to prepare for the assessments required of your degree program. Instead of taking classes in subject areas you already know, you will focus your education on the areas in which you need to gain skills and knowledge.

What about quality?

From the beginning WGU has operated with the highest standards. WGU was founded by the governors of 19 Western states (hence, our name). The competencies and assessments are developed by councils of academic and industry experts. WGU is the only university in the U.S. to be accredited by four regional accrediting bodies and one national accreditation body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
How affordable is WGU?
You will be pleased by the modest tuition of WGU. WGU is a non-profit, private university created by the Western governors to offer U.S. citizens a cost-effective, high-quality education. Federal financial aid is available to eligible students.

The WGU Teachers College
The WGU Teachers College was created with the assistance of a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, to develop online, competency-based degrees and teacher certification programs for K-12 educators and aspiring teachers.

The programs were developed using more than 10,000 state and national teacher standards and requirements, including 25 states' teacher performance standards plus those from NCATE, INTASC, NBPTS, NCTM, the National Reading Panel, and many others. The teaching certificates and endorsements are recognized by multiple states.

Financial Aid is Available
WGU was one of the first institutions selected by the U.S. Department of Education to offer federal financial aid to distance education students. Aid includes Federal Pell Grants and both subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Direct Loans.
Flexible Enough for Your Schedule
The university does not follow a traditional calendar, and new students may enroll anytime and begin their program on the first of each month.

Residency Requirements
WGU only accepts inquires and applications from individuals living in the U.S., Guam, and from U.S. military personnel at overseas installations.

State, Federal, and Corporate Support
WGU is a private, non-profit university founded in 1995 by the governors of several Western states, and is supported by 19 states and governors, and over 20 leading corporate and foundation partners, including America Online, AT&T, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Cisco Systems, Farmers Insurance Group, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, and Dell. In 2001, the Department of Education awarded WGU a $10 million Star Schools grant to fund the creation of a national Teachers College at WGU to provide online, competency-based degrees and certificates to K-12 teachers, prospective teachers, paraeducators, and second-career professionals.
